IGNIA is an example of a non US-based fund that is trying to bring commercial capital to the base of the pyramid. We have raised in excess of $50 million of equity and are based in Monterrey, Mexico. Our goal is to close our fund at $75 million in December 2009.

What about angels? Seems a shame not to mention Investors' Circle, a pioneer in social enterprise funding. It's a social venture angel group, not strictly venture capital. But, as someone who blogs about social enterprise and entrepreneurship and has covered small business for years, I would say that it's one of the most influential groups in social venture financing.
